"Climate change is a significant and lasting change in the statistical distribution of weather patterns over periods ranging from decades to millions of years. It may be a change in average weather conditions, or in the distribution of weather around the average conditions (i.e., more or fewer extreme weather events). Climate change is caused by factors that include oceanic processes (such as oceanic circulation), variations in solar radiation received by Earth, plate tectonics and volcanic eruptions, and human-induced alterations of the natural world; these latter effects are currently causing global warming, and "climate change" is often used to describe human-specific impacts." "The science of climate change and the causes both natural and now human produced greenhouse gases may not be totally conclusive (it usually isn’t, it is science which is always searching) but it sure seems to be making a strong case for human activities increasing the gas levels in the atmosphere. One research project that is very interesting to me is the trapped air bubbles in glacial ice, some of which are up to 800,000 years old, in the ice from the Antarctica and Greenland glaciers showing very little change in concentrations of CO2 except during the glacial and interglacial periods and then only from 200 ppm to 280 ppm respectively. Now CO2 from a couple hundred years ago (about the start of the industrial age) to the year 2012 has increased dramatically to the current level of 394 ppm (2012). I have looked on about 10 - 12 different websites for different references and they all seem to give about the same time-line and CO2 number. I was visiting 350.org and their organization is name after the number 350 ppm (parts per million) that many scientist say is the upper safe level of CO2. If we go beyond that number for “X” amount of time life will change as we know it. Meaning increase occurrences and more severe drought, less fresh water, more fires, more diseases, more flooding especially in coastal and low lying areas, reduction of polar ice, and much more.
There is political division though that seems to be backed by different economic interest with their respective scientific experts that swing from a complete hoax to immediate danger about global warming. No wonder the general public is confused or just don’t care.
All this if even partially true could be devastating to everything and everyone. Mankind has been using the planet's resources for thousands of years and over the years the population has been able to grow with advances in agriculture, medicine, and industry. So let us start giving back to the earth, whether we believe global warming is the result of nature or us, or both we need to change. Remember the earth can do just fine without us!" - climaterockford@gmail.com
